Dragon Age 2, ironically, takes place hundreds of years BEFORE Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age: Awakening. So, to answer, you do not need to play DA:O to understand DA2. You can, if you want, go to the Dragon Age wiki and catch up on the DA:O storyline to understand the basic idea.
I would still recommend buying Dragon Age: Origins, as it is one of the best Fantasy RPG games ever made.

Dragon Age II is not a direct sequel. It takes place in a different country, you control a different character and the game only occasionally refers to events in the first game. It would be possible, there might be some mentions going back to Origins that you might not understand in DA2, but you should be to understand most of the game just fine. I have never played borderlands so I鈥檓 sorry I can't help your there. Fallout 3 for FOREVER to get going but it is rather entertaining for at least a few hours. I personally got really bored long before I completed it but you will get your moneys worth if you just go exploring around the wastelands.
As for Dragon Age it does depend on what you want from the game. Origins has a Much better storyline, but Dragon Age 2 has a much better battle system but a liner story line and boring back drop.
I can go a little more in depth about these.
Origins: you play one of 6 characters over 3 races. Elf, Dwarf and human. Your actions as decisions directly effect both the world around your and the way your can tackle the final boss. The whole things feels larger than life and you are on a quest to save the world from darksporn.
Dragon Age 2 : You play Hawk, he or she is a human who is running from the Darksporn from Origins and ends up in Kirkwall. You solve a few problems which are completely meaningless to anyone who isn't Hawk the you're treated to the usual annoying ending which leaves the whole game wide open to a sequel.

Listen to me, I have played and beaten both of these games and let me tell you, Mass Effect 2 comes out in the lead by FAR! The first Mass Effect game was amazing with it's cinematics, great graphics, awesome gameplay and memorable characters, you will fall in love. I call Dragon Age Bioware's little gift that they gave gamers until Mass Effect 2 came out. Dragon Age was nothing special at all, it had a lot of bugs, the graphics weren't good at, the characters were very stiff and it just seemed like Bioware just through bunch of things together to make it. And I'm not saying Mass Effect 2 didn't have it's bugs or problems but Bioware took that fixed everything and perfected everything and turned it into Mass Effect 2. Play Mass Effect 2 if you want something to remember, not some old fashioned medieval times/LOTOR style RPG.
Both games are great and they are by the same developer, so I advice you to get both, but if it's going to be only one, then the answer will be depending on your preferences:
1- If you prefer science fiction = Mass effect, if you prefer fantasy = Dragon age

DAO is really great. Different origin stories depending on your character's race and many different choices. The ending made me tear up a little.
Bioware is awesome. I recommend pretty much anything they've made. Especially Knights of the Old Republic!

i would get dragon age origins, its a long game that will keep you busy and has a lot of story lines to go by. also there are a lot of classes you can pick and a huge weapon selection and a long story line. ive played for like 40 hours and only 50% done.

I was just wondering from other people experiences with playing dragon age, origins, and dragon age 2. Is it worth getting and playing? I have demo'd both the PS3 %26amp; PC version of Dragon Age II. Here are the results....
Console: Great graphics, near identical to PC version (even with the PC's boost in resolution), and great framerates.
PC: Great graphics on high resolution, somewhat dull in colors (maybe my PC monitor who knows), but more important to note and unfortunate.....it was quite choppy in comparison to the console version.
Conclusion: The fact Dragon Age II was choppy on PC (even with my gtx 560 ti), and seemed more optimized for consoles (with the new menu and controls) pretty much made me decide to go with the console version. Take what i have said and what IGN had to say (maybe do some research too) and decide.

Isabela was a minor character in Origins and didn't have a very unique design. They wanted to make her more special and consistent with her back story for DA2. This is why they changed her. I actually don't mind, she looked kind of old and worn out in origins.

Yes and no. Some characters from Origins are returning in DA2, but mostly you don't need to have cleared Origins to enjoy DA2. You can import your Origins save to DA2 but you will still be playing as a new character, only few thing will be altered by things you did in Origins. So you can safely play DA2 without needing to have played Origins. But I sill recommend you play Originins too, it is a great game.

In this one the Templar order is falling apart and the opening begins with a templar women who has a dwarf brought in to question him about a champion who can save the order of the templars. As you play you realize that the dwarf joins your party later in the story and is actually your friend in game. You play as the champion who the templars are looking for. Although there are a few characters from dragon age origins that you will recognize. The first one you meet is the sinister witch of the wilds, Flemeth. You wont recognize her however because she looks way younger. If you got Flemeths black grimoire in the first dragon age and gave it to her daughter Morigan then you already know that Flemeth found immortality by casting a spell on her daughter, taking her youth. And that she plans to do it on Morigan. Wether or not she did succeed and take Morigains youth is unclear however because she leaves at the end of Dragon age one. You run to the Free Marches while your DAO character was probably still sorting out the mages, dalish and dwarves. After the Blight is over in Ferelden, your story continues on with your DA2 character's rise to legendary status.
Some DAO/A characters make cameos, and Anders/Justice does join your party. But the storylines are mostly separate.

I think Origins is better as there is much more variaty in how you can play:you can go to many other city's in origins in 2 you can only go in one city and in 2 you can't change your party members armor in origins you can. OPINONS!!

I have to say that i still prefer Origins. The companions in DA2 was too shallow, Varric was the only one i felt lived up to the expectations. The fact that you couldn't change the armor on your party members was a bit annoying.The fact that you couldn't talk to your team mates while on quest was a bit stupid. And the game mechanics and interface (skills, attributes, etc...) was bit too simplified for my taste. The story was still good, i found it compelling and interesting. But i missed the sum up of the consequences of your actions at the end of the game which was in the end of both Origins and awakening.
I dont understand why they changed things that was good to begin with. Don't get me wrong, DA2 is a good game but not as good as Origins. Hector's answer seems very inaccurate to me. Both Dragon Age 2 and Fable 3 can run on consoles so a high end video card is definitely not necessary. Dragon Age 2 runs on the same engine as the first game and the video card requirement was very low. You can run the game on entry level hardware. They say the engine is being optimized so the second game will probably run better on the same hardware (just like Mass Effect 2 which runs better than ME1).
The Pentium dual core is notorious for how crappy it is compared to the Core 2 Duo so the chance that they will even test on it is very low. The chance that the requirement for both games will be a dual core is high, but the Pentium Dual Core isn't as efficient as a real dual core.
My guess is the system requirements for Dragon Age 2 will be exactly the same as the first game:
* OS: Windows Vista with SP1
* CPU: Intel Core 2 (or equivalent) running at 1.6Ghz or greater
* AMD X2 (or equivalent) running at 2.2GHZ or greater
* RAM: 1.5 GB or more
* Video: ATI Radeon X1550 256MB or greater

* DVD ROM (Physical copy)

It's been pretty long since I've played and completed Dragon Age [one], and I barely remember anything about it, but as soon as I played DA2, I remembered bits of DA1. I found out that you're using a different character in DA2, but one thing I need to know: Did Dragon Age [one] and Dragon Age 2 take place at the same time? The beginning story of DA2 was too ambiguous--I was confused because a certain opening scene explained how King Cailan was slain by a traitor. It seemed like it was stating the fact as if it happened 'recently'. If that's the case, then the time difference between the first and second game probably wasn't too distant. Perhaps, the time during the first and second game was happening in parallel? Simply put, what was happening in the first Dragon Age was happening 'at the same time' as the second Dragon Age? I'm really confused =/When did Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2 take place?

On PC medium graphics are the maximum setting when running on DirectX 9 class hardware, which is what the PS3 and Xbox 360 are. High and very high settings are reserved for DirectX 10 and 11 cards and has features that aren't compatible with consoles. So the graphics on consoles are at best the same quality as the PC version on medium.
The only thing I can't specify is whether the console versions run at medium or something lower than that, but it's certain anything higher than that is impossible on that hardware because the consoles were developed before DirectX 10 was released.

High and very high settings are reserved for DirectX 10 and 11 cards and has features that aren't compatible with consoles. So the graphics on consoles are at best the same quality as the PC version on medium.
The only thing I can't specify is whether the console versions run at medium or something lower than that, but it's certain anything higher than that is impossible on that hardware because the consoles were developed before DirectX 10 was released.

How to uninstall the DLC in Dragon Age 2?
For some reason I need to uninstall the DLC in Dragon Age 2. I tried to disable it then delete it from the directory folder. However, when I try to load my last saved game, errors occur that it cannot load because the DLC is not installed.
So how to uninstall it in the correct way without having the error?

Well first think about cross-class combos. This is where a character of one class affects the status of an enemy, which can then be exploited by another party member of a different class. So, having all mages in a party won't work as well. For example, if a mage uses a spell such as Cone of Cold, this can cause an enemy to become 'brittle'. A warrior can exploit this weakness by performing a move that can instantly 'shatter' the enemy (this only works on lower-level enemies, since most higher-level enemies are immune to most effects), with a move like Pommel Strike or Shield Bash (I think these two moves work, but you may want to check just in case). So, it's always an idea to have a warrior, rogue and mage in the party at all times, plus one extra of whicever class you choose. You can find online (or in the game guide) a list of which moves cause which statuses, and from there which moves exploit said status changes.
Actually choosing party members is important. It all depends on what sort of Hawke you're playing. If you're a tank, then you don't want someone like Aveline in your party because then you have two tanks, which you don't really need. Same as if you're an archer, you won't want Varric or Sebastian (if he's recruitable to you) on your team. However, you can have two mages, depending on what their skills are. Yes, I say deffinitly. I honestly really prefered Origins, and they really are completely different games. The only thing I prefered about 2 was the battle system, Origins isn't as fast pased but its similar. No tapping "a" needed too, which isn't as fun personally. But the storyline and characters are much better in my opinion.
Since u played 2 first you'll just be going "oooh" every so often in Origins when u meet a certain character, or a certain part in the story happens. Its a cool feeling. The game is so much fun, i would recommend it to anyone. Even if u played 2 first, doesn't matter. Not much spoilers anyway, some but not many really. All u know is "the hero of ferelden stopped the blight" thats nothing. You have to play it to experience it.

Each path meets at a certain part, but all starts different and gives u a person that u consider a friend or what not in the beginning.

DA:O is pretty different compared to DA2. From the standpoint of any RPG fanatic, especially the longtime ones, DA:O remains at the top above DA2.
Dragon Age 2 wasn't bad, but it lacked what made Dragon Age: Origins special. The tactical RPG feel was more or less gone and replaced with shallow flashiness, stinky streamlined inventories and streamlined partners, and restricted character builds compared to the first game. No, you can understand DA2 just fine without playing DAO. There are a few neat little references to the first game, though, plus some old characters show up.
In my opinion, even though you don't have to, you should still play them in order. DAO gives you a HUGE understanding of the way the world works. The status of the mages, the Dalish, elves in general, etc. Plus, once you complete DAO, you can upload all the decisions (and believe me, there are a LOT of unique decisions that have impact on the second game) when creating your character in DA2, so that all the things you made happen in the first game apply in the second, and characters react to this, personally I got all nostalgic but that's just me.
Also: If you do play DAO, download the expansion Awakening, since there's a further three very important characters you meet there who are in DA2, plus there's a few more things that impact, and also it's just a fun game in general, consideing it's a DLC.

You can also import a saved game from Origins to Awakening and both of them to Dragon age 2.
So really if you want to get the most out of your gaming experience i would recommend to start at the beginning - Origins.
Both area great games, im currently busy with DA 2, Origins provide more choice, as DA 2 is a fixed character plot.
In my opinion if you want a fully based RPG experience go for Origins first.

I have to say that I did enjoy my first playthrough, but towards the end I grew tired of all the repeated environments. Bioware obviously did not put in as much effort into the game as the original. Without spoiling the game I can tell you it is really just three basic (but big) parts the Deep Roads, The Qunari conflict and the Mages Vs Templars finally.

It may be frustrating, but you should play Dragon Age Origins before Dragon Age 2. You can carry over your save data and it does affect Dragon Age 2. Divinity 2 isn't that good of a game, though...however that's my opinion. Buy DA Origins, Awakening, and 2 first. In Origins and Awakening, don't charge right into battle. Queue up moves. And lastly, don't make all of your characters use the same stuff, like don't have 3 tanks. Have one person do one thing.
Other than that, you're good.

I have to say that I did enjoy my first playthrough, but towards the end I grew tired of all the repeated environments. Bioware obviously did not put in as much effort into the game as the original. Without spoiling the game I can tell you it is really just three basic (but big) parts the Deep Roads, The Qunari conflict and the Mages Vs Templars finally.
BUT I have to say if you are a huge fan of the original you should consider buying it, BUT if not then maybe spend your money on another game.I plan on Getting Dragon Age 2 And Divinity 2 The Dragon Age Saga from Gamestop?
It may be frustrating, but you should play Dragon Age Origins before Dragon Age 2. You can carry over your save data and it does affect Dragon Age 2. Divinity 2 isn't that good of a game, though...however that's my opinion. Buy DA Origins, Awakening, and 2 first. In Origins and Awakening, don't charge right into battle. Queue up moves. And lastly, don't make all of your characters use the same stuff, like don't have 3 tanks. Have one person do one thing.
Other than that, you're good.

BioWare has recently updated the official Dragon Age II FAQ, revealing the minimum and recommended system requirements for the upcoming sequel, which is scheduled to launch on March 8 in North America and on March 11 in Europe.
Earlier today, BioWare announced “The Exiled Prince,” a DLC add-on that will be available for purchase on day one when the game releases. If you pre-order Dragon Age II before January 11, the DLC will be included free of charge along with a digital soundtrack and some exclusive in-game weapons. I never played Dragon Age Origins or Awakening. I watched game play videos of DA2 and it caught my interest.

No, it's not absolute needed to play DAO before DA2. Bioware was nice enough to give three different pre-created files for you to use that says what happened in DAO when you start up a new game in DA2 if you choose to not import a previous file.

If you're good with the customization tools you'll probably be able to translate your custom character into Mass Effect 2. Both of the games have a large amount of tools for character customization, but obviously the tools are not the same. It might be tough, you'll just have to try it out.

They really aren't all that similar. Elders Scrolls is far more expansive. Dragon Age is also pretty linear (especially II). Elder Scrolls also offers far more in terms of customization of how characters abilities can be used. Elder Scrolls game are also a lot longer if you get everything out of them. Dragon Age also has a KotOR style combat system, while Elder Scrolls is real-time. That being said, I actually enjoy the Dragon Age series. Will I be able to transfer My Dragon Age Awakening Character to Dragon Age 2?

For Dragon Age 2 you will be playing a new character named Hawke. You can't import your warden, but you can import the decisions you made in both origins and awakening. Things like who is ruling Fereldan, what happened to the dwarves, the architect, ect... will all be mentioned in DA2.
So yes you can import your Awakening save in to DA2.
